Oak Run Computer Club

General MEETING MINUTES for:

May 20, 2009

John Baccoli opened the meeting at 9:00 AM

He discussed the changes in future meeting plans and the reasons for them.

Jim Dillman will prepare badges for those who paid their dues today and will deliver them to members' homes so they can participate in the drawing for a new laptop by Linc Abshier at the June meeting.

John then introduced visitors attending today’s meeting.  There was only one.

Jim Dillman introduced our speaker for the day, Linc Abschier, who spoke on “Computer Memory.”  Linc has opened a computer shop in Kingsland Plaza . . . opposite Pine Run. He is having drawing for members of the Oak Run Computer Club . . . giving away a laptop computer, an all-in-one printer/scanner/ copier plus three smaller prizes.  An entry blank is available today, or may be filed out and turned in at this shop prior to the Tuesday before the June meeting.  You do not have to be present to win.

I his memory discussion, he addressed topics such as how to determine the amount of memory needed, sluggish computer speed and the type of memory needed. He pointed out that some brands of memory cards are more reliable than others.  Economy model computers tend to have less reliable brands of memory in them.  He mentioned “Kingston” as a reliable brand and “Integrity” one to be avoided.  Memory cards should be installed in matched pairs.  Research your manual, or manufacturer’s web site, for info on the correct type of memory for your computer model.

Linc then had a Q & A session, taking a number of interesting questions from members, including “will Windows 7 be better.”  He suggested waiting for at least six months for the bugs to appear and get worked out and first Service Pack has been made available.

50/50 drawing was for three $12.00 prizes.  There were 2 door prize winners, but in Laura Stein’s absence, names were taken for prize distribution later.

Attendance today was 70 members and 3 non-members.

Respectfully submitted,

Harry Kirby, Secretary.

Editor-in-Chief Monthly Meeting Location Housekeeping Message

ORCC Newsletter is Edited by:Dave Simmons. E-Mail: dws@oakruncomputerclub.com

Regular meetings of the Oak Run Computer Club are held in the Orchid Club Auditorium at 9:00 a.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.

ORHA expects all tables and chairs to be reset after every meeting. Please clear your tables of all materials before leaving. Please do your part to put the Auditorium back in "original" order after club meetings.  Straighten your chairs and leave nothing but your "ghostly" footprints. Thank you for helping us. See you next month!

TIPS

Tip of the Day

Quick Tip

How to back up the registry

We always recommend backing up the registry before editing it - just in case. But we invariably get mail from readers asking "how do I do that?" Well, here's how:

Open the registry editor by typing regedit.exe in the Run | Open box.
To back up the entire registry, highlight the root of the registry tree in the left pane, labeled Computer.
Click the File menu and select Export...
Give the backup a name and save it as a .reg file to a location you'll be able to access easily (we recommend saving it to a separate partition or hard disk, a USB drive or a flash memory card).
To restore from your backup, follow the same steps but in Step 3, select Import... and then navigate to your backup file and select Open.
